# Supported Mail gateways

Smartico delivers outbound email communications through native integrations with industry-leading Email Service Providers (ESPs) and custom gateway protocols. Operators can connect multiple mail gateways simultaneously to segregate transactional and marketing traffic, route campaigns across different brands, and optimize inbox placement.

Email gateways are configured in the Smartico Back-Office under **Label Settings → Gateways → Mail**. Each gateway connection manages authentication credentials, webhook callback URLs for delivery and engagement tracking, default sending pools, and sender address definitions.

***

## How Email Gateway Configuration Works

When setting up or editing an email gateway, the Back-Office provides a 4-step configuration wizard:

1. **Provider Selection**: Choose your email delivery provider from the supported catalog or select the custom gateway option.
2. **Conditions & Scope**:

   * **Gateway Name**: A friendly label for internal identification.
   * **Default Gateway**: Set whether this gateway is the primary default mail provider for the label.
   * **Brand Targeting**: Restrict the gateway to specific brands or apply it across all brands.
   * **Custom Conditions (Based on the user state Properties)**: If dynamic gateway selection properties are configured for the label, specify one or more profile attribute values (such as country, VIP tier, brand, or language) to restrict the gateway to matching players during automatic gateway routing. You can request that Smartico Success Manager enable them based on your needs.

3. **Authentication & Configuration**: Enter API keys, hostnames, endpoint URLs, and advanced provider-specific settings. A unique **Callback URL** is generated and displayed on this screen for providers that support webhook status synchronization. Copy this full URL to configure delivery and engagement tracking in your email service provider's webhook settings.

   * **Additional Parameters**: A flexible key-value parameter editor is available to pass optional or advanced provider arguments not exposed in the standard form fields.

   <div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://77049817-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FfS5hl0PiysHtKAKMsQTe%2Fuploads%2FeYaSDW6wsGoiNTdtTcea%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=445291a1-0281-435f-a4a9-d377acdaf1ee" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
4. **Options for From & Reply Addresses**: Configure sender and reply-to email addresses separated into two independent pools:

   * **Marketing Emails**: Promotional newsletters, retention offers, and automated marketing flows.
   * **Operational Emails**: Password resets, account verifications, KYC requests, and transactional alerts.

### Sender Address Updates & Immutability Rules

When updating existing From or Reply-To addresses on an active gateway:

* **Existing Addresses Cannot Be Removed**: Once created, sender options cannot be deleted directly from the gateway if they are already referenced by active campaigns.
* **Automatic Campaign Updates**: When modifying or adding new From or Reply-To options, Smartico automatically updates existing campaign configurations if the new list covers previous mappings.
* **Confirmation Screen**: If changes to sender addresses require manual reassignment across existing templates, a review screen prompts the operator to confirm and map the replacement options before saving.

***

### Deleting a Mail Gateway & Campaign Migration

When deleting a configured email gateway, the Back-Office prevents orphan campaign configurations by requiring a migration strategy:

* **Migrate to Auto-Selection**: Automatically switches all campaigns currently linked to the deleted gateway to use automatic provider selection based on brand and user routing conditions.
* **Migrate to Another Provider**: Reassigns linked campaigns to a specified replacement gateway, requiring the operator to map replacement From and Reply-To addresses.

## Global Provider-Side DNS & Authentication Setup

For all third-party email service providers, proper DNS authentication is mandatory to prevent emails from landing in spam folders or being rejected by mailbox providers (Gmail, Yahoo, Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail).

## Unsubscribe Headers & Compliance (RFC 8058)

Major mailbox providers (including Gmail and Yahoo) enforce strict requirements for bulk marketing senders:

1. **One-Click Unsubscribe**: Senders must include `List-Unsubscribe` and `List-Unsubscribe-Post` headers so email clients can display a native "Unsubscribe" button at the top of the message.
2. **Supported Gateways**: Senders supporting self-service header injection in Smartico include Amazon SES, Twilio SendGrid, and Mailgun.
3. **Configuration**:
   * `List-Unsubscribe`: Set to your unsubscribe endpoint URL (e.g., `<https://yourbrand.com/unsubscribe?id={{user.id}}>`) and/or a mailto address (e.g., `<mailto:unsub@yourbrand.com>`).
   * `List-Unsubscribe-Post`: Set to the literal string `List-Unsubscribe=One-Click`.

## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

### How does Smartico track email deliveries, opens, and clicks?

Smartico uses a dual-tracking architecture:

* **Delivery & Bounce Tracking**: When your ESP attempts delivery, it posts webhook events back to Smartico's callback URL. Smartico logs the message status (*Sent*, *Delivered*, *Bounced*, *Dropped*, *Complained*). For specifications on setting up custom status callback endpoints, see [Reverse integration: messaging](/welcome/technical-guides/communication-gateways/reverse-integration-messaging.md).
* **Open & Click Tracking**: Smartico embeds an invisible tracking pixel for open tracking and wraps template links through Smartico redirect endpoints (or your [Branded Links](/welcome/technical-guides/communication-gateways/branded-links.md) domain). For providers that manage open/click tracking natively, the webhook callbacks also synchronize open and click facts into Smartico analytics.

### Can I use different From addresses for different brands on the same gateway?

Yes. When configuring a mail gateway, you can enter multiple From and Reply-To email addresses in the **Options for From & Reply** screen (e.g., `Brand A <promo@brand-a.com>`, `Brand B <news@brand-b.com>`). When building email templates in the Email Template Editor, operators can select the specific From address desired from the dropdown.

### What is the difference between Marketing and Operational From pools?

Smartico separates From address pools into **Marketing** and **Operational** sections within each gateway configuration:

* **Marketing From Options**: Used by default in marketing campaigns, automated journeys, and promotional broadcasts.
* **Operational From Options**: Used for transactional messages (password resets, 2FA codes, account notices). Operational messages can bypass marketing opt-out checks when configured as transactional communications.

### What happens if my ESP credentials or API key expires?

If an API key is revoked or expires, outgoing email activities will fail with gateway authentication errors. Failed attempts are logged in the campaign execution logs and the user's communication history in the Back-Office. Update the gateway settings under **Label Settings → Gateways → Mail** with the new API key to resume sending immediately.

### How can I test a newly configured mail gateway before launching live campaigns?

To verify that a new gateway is functioning correctly before sending communications to players, you can test message delivery in two ways:

1. **Send Preview**: Open any email template in the Email Template Editor, select the new gateway in the sending options, and use the **Send Preview** feature to send a test email to your own address.
2. **Seed Segment Test**: Create a test campaign targeted to an internal seed segment containing verified test accounts, and confirm that emails are received as expected and tracked in the recipient's communication history in the Back-Office.

### What should I do if our preferred email provider is not listed?

If your organization uses an email service provider not currently supported in the catalog, you have two options:

1. **Your Secured Email Gateway**: Connect your in-house sending microservice using our [Secured Messaging Gateways](/welcome/technical-guides/communication-gateways/secured-messaging-gateways-email-sms-im.md) API.
2. **Request Gateway Development**: Contact your Smartico Customer Success Manager or Integration Manager. Our team will analyze the provider's API specifications and build a native adapter.

### How does automatic gateway selection route emails when multiple gateways are configured?

When a campaign or automated communication uses automatic provider selection, Smartico determines the appropriate gateway dynamically at dispatch time:

1. **Brand Matching**: Smartico checks whether any active gateway is restricted to the recipient's brand.
2. **Custom Conditions**: If custom routing properties (such as player country, language, or VIP tier) are enabled, Smartico evaluates them against the player's profile attributes.
3. **Default Gateway**: If no brand-specific or condition-based gateway matches, the email is routed through the gateway marked as **Default Gateway** for the label.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.smartico.ai/welcome/technical-guides/communication-gateways/supported-mail-gateways.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
