# Label base currency

The **Label Base Currency** is the primary accounting and operational currency configured for a label in Smartico. It serves as the baseline denomination for normalizing player transactions across multiple currencies, calculating financial analytics and attribution values, and providing default monetary thresholds across CRM and gamification features.

## What is Label Base Currency and What is it Used For?

While players may register and transact in various currencies across your brands, Smartico unifies financial tracking and automation through the label base currency.

Key platform features powered by the base currency include:

* **Unified Financial Reporting and Business Intelligence (BI):** Incoming financial events (such as deposits, withdrawals, casino bets, and sports wagers) carrying player-specific currencies are automatically converted into the label base currency in real time using automated exchange rate feeds. This enables consolidated reporting for metrics like Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR), Net Gaming Revenue (NGR), Turnover, and Total Deposits.
* **Attribution Value (AV) and Marketing ROI:** In marketing campaign analytics, Attribution Value is calculated and displayed in the label base currency, allowing marketing teams to measure campaign conversion revenue across diverse international audiences under a single standard unit.
* **Default Monetary Thresholds:** Multi-currency conditions in missions, badges, campaigns, segments and automation rules do not use the base currency (for tournaments that use **Convert bet and win amounts to the label currency**, see below). A player gets the amount set for the player's own currency. When there is no amount for that currency, the amount in the **Default** field is used.
* **Platform Benchmarks:** Multi-brand and industry benchmark comparisons convert operational performance metrics to standard benchmarks using the label base currency.

## Selection and Lock During Label Creation

The base currency is selected during the initial creation of a label. You can see it in the Back-Office under **Label** → **Label, settings** → **System settings** → **General**, in the **Base currency of the label** setting:

1. When the label is created, the desired currency (e.g., EUR, USD, BRL, GBP) is selected in the **Base currency** dropdown.
2. Once the label is created and saved, the setting is locked in standard Back-Office settings to safeguard data integrity. Only Smartico administrators can change it.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://77049817-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FfS5hl0PiysHtKAKMsQTe%2Fuploads%2Fv2R52QF9DyPEQjoXfFFg%2F6ddeb8bbac-new-1-510d352b-3dac9b.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption><p>1 — Base currency of the label in Label, settings → System settings → General</p></figcaption></figure></div>

Because all subsequent transactional calculations, user profile aggregations, and historical reporting depend on this reference point, selecting the appropriate base currency before launching live campaigns or integrating event feeds is critical.

## Changing Base Currency: Operational Risks and Inconsistencies

Changing the base currency of an existing label is only safe **before any live event flow or financial transactions have been processed** (such as during early sandbox testing or brand onboarding).

Once a label has an active stream of player events, changing the base currency is strongly discouraged because **Smartico does not retroactively recalculate historical transactions or event history**. Changing the base currency on an active label introduces critical data and operational inconsistencies across five key areas:

### 1. Financial Reporting and BI Discrepancies

* **Mixed-Currency Aggregate Totals:** Reports spanning periods before and after the change (such as monthly GGR, year-to-date turnover, or last 30 days deposits) will sum values from both currencies without converting past data. For example, 1,000 EUR recorded before the change and 1,000 USD recorded after will sum directly to 2,000 nominal units, generating distorted financial totals.
* **Misleading Currency Symbols:** Back-Office analytics and reporting dashboards display the label's active base currency symbol across all historical views. Historical records will display the new currency symbol next to amounts that were originally processed in the old currency (for example, a historical 500 EUR deposit will display as 500 USD).
* **Distorted Attribution Value (AV):** Campaign performance and conversion totals will blend numbers across currencies, skewing ROI metrics.

### 2. Active Tournaments and Leaderboards

* **Distorted Leaderboard Scoring:** If a tournament converts wager amounts into the label base currency for score calculation (the **Convert bet and win amounts to the label currency** label setting), bets placed before the change were converted using the old currency rate, while bets placed after will convert to the new currency. If the two currencies differ in nominal value (e.g., EUR vs. BRL), players wagering after the change will accumulate leaderboard points at a drastically different pace.
* **Nominal Prize Pool Shifts:** A bonus prize pool of a clan tournament keeps the **Currency** it was saved with, and each payout is converted from that currency to the player's currency. The **Currency** of a new prize pool starts with the label base currency, so check it on prize pools you create after the change (e.g., a pool meant as 1,000 EUR can be saved as 1,000 USD or 1,000 BRL).

### 3. Missions, Badges, Levels, and Automation Rules

* **In-Progress Cumulative Tasks:** Tasks requiring cumulative monetary amounts (such as "Deposit a total of 100" or "Wager 500") compare amounts in the player's own currency with the amount set for that currency (or the **Default** amount). They do not use the base currency, so a base currency change does not move the progress of these tasks.
* **Rule Condition Thresholds:** Automation rules and audience segment conditions with static numerical thresholds will evaluate incoming event values against the existing threshold in the new currency context.

### 4. Shop Items, Mini-Games, and Bonus Templates

* **Shop Pricing and Monetary Limits:** Shop items configured with fixed coin-to-money values, buy-in costs, or bonus cost limits retain their previous numerical values, altering their true economic cost.
* **Mini-Game Rewards:** Cash drops and fixed reward buy-ins in Spin-the-Wheel, Lootboxes, and MatchX will carry previous numerical figures into the new currency denomination.

### 5. Multi-Currency Reference Rates and User Profiles

* **Multi-Currency Reference Rates:** The reference rate table configured under [Multi-currency usage report](/welcome/products/tools-and-guides/multi-currency-usage-report.md) has its own **Base currency**, chosen in the **Currencies rates** window. It does not change when the label base currency changes. If you want both to match, update the table by hand.
* **User Profile Summaries:** Summary statistics and lifetime financial metrics displayed on user profiles will retain historical totals in the old currency until gradually updated by ongoing activity.

## Best Practices and Recommendations

* **Choose Carefully at Onboarding:** Determine your primary reporting currency during label setup before connecting payment or gaming feeds.
* **Create a Dedicated Label for New Markets:** If your business is expanding to a region requiring a different accounting base currency or separate financial reporting, set up a new label or brand rather than modifying an active one. Learn more about organizing brands in [Multi-brands support](/welcome/products/tools-and-guides/multi-brands-support.md).
* **Handling Mandatory Pre-Launch Changes:** If an incorrect base currency was chosen during staging, contact Smartico support to adjust the base currency **before** routing production event traffic.
* **Precautions if an Active Label Must Be Changed:** In rare scenarios where changing an active label is unavoidable:
  1. Schedule the change at a clean accounting boundary (such as the start of a calendar month or new financial quarter).
  2. Conclude and settle all active tournaments, raffles, and time-sensitive missions before applying the change.
  3. Review and adjust monetary thresholds in active missions, badges, bonus templates, shop items, and automation rules.
  4. Update and re-save the reference rates in the [Multi-currency usage report](/welcome/products/tools-and-guides/multi-currency-usage-report.md).

## Base Currency vs. Multi-Currency Usage Reference Rates

It is important to distinguish between the two currency mechanisms in Smartico:

* **Label Base Currency:** The platform-level operational currency configured on the label. It drives the automated, live exchange rate conversion pipeline for all event processing, analytics, and Attribution Value calculations.
* **Multi-Currency Reference Rates (Tools > Smartico internal > Currency usage):** A manually entered table of exchange rates used strictly within the [Multi-currency usage report](/welcome/products/tools-and-guides/multi-currency-usage-report.md). This table allows operators to define expected thresholds and identify discrepancy alerts across manual multi-currency condition inputs (such as deposit tiers), but does not alter the automated live exchange rates used for BI reporting.

## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

### Can players on the label use currencies different from the label base currency?

Yes. Smartico fully supports multi-currency operations. Players can register, deposit, and wager in their own account currencies. The player's balance and local amounts are respected in player-facing communications and gamification widgets, while the system normalizes the amounts into the label base currency for unified reporting.

### Is the label base currency always EUR?

No. While EUR is commonly used, you can configure any supported fiat or cryptocurrency (e.g., USD, GBP, BRL, CAD, USDT) as your label base currency during setup.

### Why is the Base currency dropdown disabled when editing a label?

The base currency field is locked after creation (only Smartico administrators can change it) to prevent accidental changes that would corrupt historical financial reports, distort leaderboard scoring, and misalign rule conditions.

### What should we do if we operate multiple brands with different local currencies?

You can manage multi-currency rules using dedicated currency fields in your conditions, or configure distinct brands and labels with their own respective base currencies. See [Multi-brands support](/welcome/products/tools-and-guides/multi-brands-support.md) and [Multi-currency usage report](/welcome/products/tools-and-guides/multi-currency-usage-report.md) for detailed configuration steps.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.smartico.ai/welcome/products/tools-and-guides/label-base-currency.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
